Restaurant 1 Cern – CERN’s Cafeteria

Physicists at CERN, the particle accelerating and detection lab, have to eat. And they go to the cafeteria not just to refuel but also to socialise and discuss their experiments.

Restaurant 1 will remain open for eating in, and it’s still possible to order meals in advance via MyNovae (to be collected from R1). However, all other restaurants and cafeterias are closed at the Meyrin site.

The food

Physicists at CERN work hard and need to eat. The cafeteria is the place where they gather to share lunch, socialize, and discuss their experiments. The cafeterias are well-run and provide a large variety of food at a reasonable price. They also serve a selection of beverages, including beer and wine.

Restaurant 1 (R1) has a new Click & Collect service, with options to order meals in advance via MyNovae. It has been enhanced to reflect the changes in menus across the CERN restaurants and to allow you to select a time when you’ll be available for collection.

Despite being overcrowded during lunch times on working days, the cafeteria serves decent food for a fair price. It has a selection of warm dishes, such as lasagna with eggplant and filet de perche, and a long dessert table. It also has two salad bars, with a range of choices, and sandwiches. Meals are served in ReCircle boxes, which can be returned for a deposit or exchanged for meals at other Novae locations.

The restaurant is part of a larger complex that provides meals for the entire CERN community. These include physicists who do boundary-pushing scientific work, as well as engineers, support staff, administrators, and construction workers. The cafeteria is a space where these workers can gather together and discuss their work.

As the virus continues to decline and normal life returns to the Meyrin site, the CERN services are busy preparing for a return to business as usual. They are introducing new ranges, new distribution methods (click & collect, meal jars), and outside eating areas to make it easier for people to come together while complying with the pandemic restrictions.
